Portrait in Charcoal (58x58cm)
I wanted to depict the sitter as if the whole pictorial surface was “weeping”.
By intentionally avoiding more distinct use of line in the rendering of facial features, the viewers gaze returns and becomes “fixated” with the eyes. This repetition of concern with the ‘gaze’ and the close intensity of the subject; all assist in conveying the affective distress which resonates outwards towards the observer.
