THE UNCANNY VALLEY - PART 2 OF 3

Puppets, with their lifelike movements and human-like appearances, often traverse the terrain of the uncanny valley. They possess characteristics that bridge the gap between the inanimate and the living, eliciting both fascination and unease in observers. Traditional puppets, such as those used in puppet theater or ventriloquism, have long fascinated audiences with their ability to convey emotion and narrative. These puppets, typically operated by puppeteers behind the scenes, rely on simple mechanisms and exaggerated features to evoke human-like expressions. Despite their obvious artificiality, they captivated audiences through the suspension of disbelief.

Similarly, the artistry of puppetry in film and television has led to the creation of incredibly lifelike characters that teeter on the edge of the uncanny valley. From the intricate animatronics of Yoda in the "Star Wars" franchise to the digital puppetry of Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings," filmmakers continually push the boundaries of what is possible with puppetry and visual effects. These characters, while visually impressive, often evoke a subtle sense of unease due to their near-human likeness.
